Scar Treatments

Effective treatment
for all types of scars

Scar Treatments London.

Scar ttreatments are one of our main focuses at Borciani London is the work we do on removing and reducing scars with an emphasis on self harm scars

We are constantly researching the best scar treatments and technologies, as we understand the impact they can have, scars affect more than the skin they are on, often leaving people feeling extremely self-conscious frequently covering the area with clothing, makeup or hair.

We have an extensive range of scar treatments from powerful CO2 ablative lasers,  growth factor induction therapy and effective pigmentation treatments. We are able to treat all skin types including Fitzpatrick 5&6 and both new and old scars.  During the consutlation we will discuss the best options for you based on your scar and skin type.

Scars are often difficult to treat as they heal in unpredictable and different ways, some are light in colour and raised, some are darker and smooth, they will often require multiple sessions due to the skin texture and will take time to heal fully.  The good news is that due to incredible new developments, we now have really effective ways of improving scar tissue.

We appreciate that it can be very difficult to know which treatment you will need as scars can often fall into several categories, we would be happy to arrange a consultation (in-clinic or by phone) to discuss your scars and make sure we have the right treatment protocol for you.

The majority of scars will fall into one or more of the following categories, there are some extremely effective treatments for each.

Factors for the type of treatment will depend on the following:

  • Your age, health, and medical history
  • Severity and position of the scar
  • Type of scar
  • Your tolerance for specific medications, procedures, or therapies
  • Your preference for treatment and downtime

Scar treatments and types

Self-Harm Scars

These scars are found most commonly on the arms, stomach and thighs, they are usually raised and quite fibrous due to the repetition of damage to the tissue.

Self-harm most often occurs during adolescence and teenage years and the scars, once healed, can be extremely difficult to live with and cover in later years.

We have been working extensively to find the most effective treatments for this type of scar and recent developments in technologies have made it possible for us to significantly reduce self-harm scars.  We use a combination of CO2 Laser,  Nano Fractional Laser, Growth Factor Induction and Scar Camouflage.

Raised Scars

These are referred to as ‘hypertrophic’, they are often post-surgical or from an accident. They can look uneven, lumpy and feel quite fibrous.

There are a number of ways that we can ‘soften’ and flatten these scars.  CO2 Laser, Nano Fractional laser and Growth Factor Induction Therapy are excellent options which have been extremely effective at softening and flattening these types of scars.

Depressed Scars

These scars are indented rather than raised, they are often a result of an accident, childhood diseases (such as chickenpox), or acne (ice pick, boxcar). There are a number of methods which will improve the look of these scars.

The Venus Skin Resurfacer , Growth Factor Induction Therapy and Chemical Peels are excellent at smoothing the texture of the skin and reducing these scars. We are happy to discuss the best options for you.

Pigmented Scars

Hyperpigmentation often targets clients with an olive skin tone and darker (Fitzpatrick III to VI). Traditional methods to reduce the scarring are not appropriate as this will often cause Post Inflammatory Pigmentation (PIH) or further darkening which will usually lighten on it’s own within 3-12 months.

We are now able to lighten this pigmentation safely

CO2 Laser – This is the gold standard for reducing scars, by choosing cooler settings we are able to reduce the chances of PIH.  We will also combine with a course of Cyspera to reduce the pigmenations.

Melanin Inhibitor – We have an extremely effective protocol which is an at home treatment, it can be used on the face and body and by all skin types with no risk of additional hyperpigmentation.  Cyspera can be purchased in the clinic or we can post out to you. Read More

Versa IPL – this is an excellent option for light to medium skin tones, the treatment effectively targets pigment under the skin’s surface to reduce the appearance of discoloration. The treatment also works on such as spider veins and port wine stains.

PRX Reverse Peel –  It’s a 3 stage peel which is safe to use on all skin tones and is one of the only peels which does not make you photosensitive in the sun.

Light Scars - Hypopigmentation

These scars are often present following surgery, trauma and self harm, the scar will heal with no pigment, leaving a white or translucent area of scar tissue.

We can custom blend a pigment to completely match your skin tone and implant this pigment in the skin using Micropigmentation techniques, the effect is incredibly natural and lasts around 24 months at which point we can ‘refresh’ the colour for you.

This is a great option for anyone who is using camouflage makeup and would like a more long-term solution.

Keloid Scars

These are raised, smooth scars, often looking more like a blister than a scar and very common in darker skins.  Keloid scars respond very well to steroid injections and silicone therapy to ‘flatten’ the scar down.

There have been some exciting new reports documenting the efficacy of muscle relaxers to treat keloids.

Contractures

Contractures are an abnormal occurrence that happens when a large area of skin is damaged and lost, resulting in a scar. The scar formation pulls the edges of the skin together, causing a tight area of skin which can affect the muscles, joints, and tendons causing a decrease in movement, mobility and flexibility.

There are many different surgical treatment options for contractures, including the following:

Co2 lasers are excellent at softening the contracted tissue, clients may also benefit from Growth Factor Needling to further soften and accelerate healing..

Scar Treatments

CO2 Fractional Ablative Laser

CO2 fractional laser is the gold standars for scars.  It works on both hypertrophic and atrophic scarring by not only ablating the upper layers of the dermis but also reaching the deeper layers of the scar to regenerate healthy tissue.

Previously CO2 lasers were fully ablative resulting in significant downtime and discomfort for the patient.  Lynton’s Fractional CO2 provides the same effective treatment but with a reduced downtime.  The CO2 is our preferred treatment for self-harm scars.

Skin Resurfacing Nano Fractional Laser

Venus Viva™ is a non-surgical solution for skin resurfacing that corrects signs of skin damage and improves the appearance of all scars including acne scars, self-harm scars, hypertrophic and atrophic – it is also extremely effective for  stretch marks, rosacea, enlarged pores, deep wrinkles, and uneven skin texture and pigmentation. Unlike lasers, this treatment is safe for all skin types and skin tones.

Venus Viva™ skin resurfacing treatments work with tiny pins that safely deliver heat (via NanoFractional Radio Frequency) through the skin’s surface. This creates tiny tiny-dermal wounds, which the body naturally heals on its own. This process repairs signs of skin damage visible on the surface of the skin and contracts scar tissue.

Skin Needling with Growth Factors

Skin Needling is an effective treatment for scars (other than Keloid). When adding in the Growth Factors – this becomes a supercharged treatment, accelerating the healing response.  Growth Factors are a powerful messenger from the body which re-trigger the healing and rejuvenation process allowing for more effective results than microneedling alone.

Growth Factor is applied and skin is punctured with micro holes from a digital or manual roller device ‘pushing’ the GF into the skin, the GF is then reapplied for maximum penetration. The scar tissue is replaced with healthy tissue with each treatment.

Scar Camouflage

Scar Camouflage is an option for any scar which has healed lighter than the skin, this is particularly effective on darker skins as the melanin loss is more visible.  We will custom blend a pigment to perfectly match your skin tone, this pigment is impregnated into the dermal layer of the skin to camouflage the area.  Ideally the scar will be well healed, flat in appearance and non-keloid, this treatment is not suitable for scars that have healed dark.

Scars can often be a mixture of these categories, we ideally like to see patients for a consultation to check the scar tissue and discuss the best treatment options but if you have a scar that you would like to discuss please contact us on 0207 792 9132 or book your consultation by clicking the button below:

Having previously been concerned about the appearance of a post surgery scar, I was immediately put at ease by the expertise and knowledge of Natasha. From consultation through to post treatment advice, Natasha made me feel very comfortable and I’m amazed with how practically invisible my scars have become. I can’t thank her enough for the renewed confidence!

Does it hurt ?

It is completely normal to feel anxious about the procedures. We use a range of topical anaesthetics to ensure that you are as relaxed as possible during the treatment and that any discomfort is kept to an absolute minimum. Most clients describe the sensation as ‘tingling vibrations’ rather than pain and many fall asleep during the procedure.
