What are thread veins/spider veins?

Almost all of us will develop thread veins in our lives, these small red veins are harmless but can have a very ageing and unsightly effect on the skin. They are most often found on the face, back and legs and ankles and are commonly referred to as spider veins, red veins or thread veins.

Some exercises (running, horse riding) can contribute to thread veins and they are very common found in people who stand for long periods of the day such as nurses, hairdressers etc.

There is no known cause for thread veins although as the skin ages and thins they become more visible.

Advanced Electrology

A very fine probe is placed over the vein to cauterise the blood vessel, without the feeding blood flow, the vein is no longer visible.

QuadroStar Pro Laser

We use the laser to ablate the veins, you will see an improvement after each treatment and depending on the severity and depth of the veins you may need multiple sessions.

For large, bulging or symptomatic leg veins we’ll recommend vascular assessment or sclerotherapy.

What to expect after treatment

Luckily these veins are relatively easy to treat, many clients see 30–70% reduction after the first session; a short series may be recommended based on size and depth.You may experience either a blanching or redness directly afterwards although this will subside within 24 hours and you can resume normal activities immediately.

  • What are thread veins?

    Also called spider veins or telangiectasia, these are small dilated blood vessels near the skin’s surface—commonly on the nose, cheeks, legs and back. They’re harmless but can be cosmetically bothersome.

  • How do you treat them?

    We use two gold-standard options: electrology (a fine probe cauterises the vessel) and the QuadroStar Pro vascular laser to collapse superficial vessels. We’ll advise the best approach for your skin and vein type.

  • Is it suitable for leg veins?

    Yes for small, superficial spider veins. Larger, bulging or symptomatic veins may need vascular assessment or sclerotherapy; if so, we’ll guide you.

  • How many sessions will I need?

    Many clients see a visible reduction after one treatment; a series of 1–3 sessions is typical depending on size, number and depth.

  • Does it hurt? Any downtime?

    Discomfort is usually mild—often described as a brief sting or warm ping. Expect temporary redness or mild swelling for 0–48 hours; tiny scabs can occur with electrology.

  • Are results permanent?

    Treated vessels are cleared and don’t “re-open”, but new vessels can form over time due to genetics, sun, hormones or pressure. Maintenance is optional.

  • Who should avoid treatment?

    Active infection/dermatitis in the area, recent strong sun exposure or tanning, photosensitising medications, pregnancy for elective treatments. We’ll review your medical history at consultation.

  • What are the risks?

    Temporary redness, swelling, crusting or darkening along the vessel line; rare blistering or pigment change (more likely with sun). We minimise risk with correct settings and aftercare.

Aftercare red vein treatment

Following red vein removal, some aftercare will be necessary. Immediately following your treatment, skin may appear a little red and swollen it may feel hot and even sore. This will subside after a few hours.

  • Apply a cooling gel such as Witch Hazel or Aloe Vera to the area quite liberally this will keep the area cool and prevent infection
  • Avoid direct heat such as hot bath or showers, saunas and exposure to sunlight or sunbeds.
  • Use a minimum of SPF 25 when in the sun.
  • Do not apply any other product to the treated area unless specifically advised to do so
  • Avoid touching the area unnecessarily
  • Gently wash and pat dry the area, do not rub

After advanced electrolysis treatments  sometimes a very fine scab will form. Normally if the treatment is successful the blemish will simply come away from the skin.  Do not pick or rub the scab but simply let it fall off.  A few days afterwards the skin underneath may look a little pink and fresh, please repeat the treatment advise above. Skin will fully heal in 10-14 days.
