Scar Camouflage London-Camouflage Tattooing
Camouflage tattooing, also known as paramedical tattooing or micro-pigmentation, is a cosmetic procedure that uses specialised pigments and equipment to camouflage scars, stretch marks, or other skin imperfections. This procedure works on blending the colour of the scar, the microneedling effect can also have a beneficial effect on the texture of the scar but for very raised scars we recommend other treatments
Am I a good candidate?
The ideal candidate is anyone over 18 who would like to reduce the appearance of white scars, it is important to have a realistic expectation of the outcome and to be patient with the results. Regenerating skin is a complex process. Scars should be fully healed and stable (usually 9–12+ months post-injury/surgery). If your scars are under 12 months old then please do get in touch for alternative treatments.
For safety reasons, we may not be able to provide treatment if:
- If you are under 18 as it is considered a tattoo
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you are in an active harm cycle – please do reach out to us for additional options
- If you have an active skin infection or inflammation
- If you have a history of keloid scarring
- If you have cancer or undergoing chemotherapy
- If you have taken isotretinoin within 6–12 months
- Treating over tattoos or permanent makeup – but please check with us
- If you are sunburned or tanned.
We will have an informal consultation with you to assess your scars and explain the treatments in detail, we can then recommend a treatment plan that fits with your lifestyle.
We are able to treat most scars, please check out our scar hub if you are concerned about raised scars, keloid scars, red scars or acne scars
Scar Camouflage Aftercare
Scar camouflage – Before & After Care Instructions
- The area may look red directly after the treatment or if pigment has been used, this may look darker than expected during the first week. During the second week the pigment may look faded as it is hidden under the healing skin.
- With treatments on stretch marks the redness will be contained within the stretch mark and the skin will be raised and warm to the touch, your skin may remain red for between 1-4 days as the skin heals.
- If your treatment is on the face or head, it may help to sleep with the head slightly raised to assist with swelling.
- Avoid excessive exposure to the sun for a minimum of 6 weeks following the treatment; use a high factor (minimum SPF30) sunblock with UVA and UVB protection.
For 7 days
- Apply a healing balm 3 times a day using a cotton bud and ensure that your hands are clean to avoid infection.
- Apply Vaseline to the site when showering or bathing
Avoid for 14 days
- Astringent soaps or cleansers directly on the treatment site
- Heavy moisturisers, creams and makeup on the area
- Picking or scratching any scabs that have formed.
- Chlorine pools, saunas and Jacuzzis
- All products containing Aloe
- Long baths or hot, extended showers
Long term care
Use a sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your camouflage and prevent discolouration
If you are planning a chemical peel, MRI or other medical procedures, please inform the practitioner that you have had a medical tattoo.
If you donate blood, please advise the donation centre as you may not be able to give blood for an allotted period of time.
Please inform the operator if you are planning IPL/Laser treatments as this may remove/discolour the pigment.

Commonly asked questions — Camouflage Tattooing
-
What is scar camouflage (paramedical tattooing)?
It’s a form of micro-pigmentation in which medical-grade pigments are implanted into lighter or unevenly coloured areas (e.g., scars or stretch marks) to blend them with the surrounding skin.
-
Who is a good candidate?
Adults over 18 with hypopigmented or colour-mismatched scars or stretch marks. Suitability depends on scar maturity, skin type, medications, and recent sun exposure. We’ll assess in consultation.
-
How old should my scar be before treatment?
Scars generally need to be fully healed and stable—typically 9–12+ months after the last trauma or surgery, with no ongoing redness or keloid activity.
-
What types of scars respond best?
Flat, pale (hypopigmented) scars and stretch marks usually respond well. Raised/keloid scars, very dark hyperpigmented areas, or active/inflamed skin are not ideal; we’ll advise alternatives.
-
How many sessions will I need?
Expect 2–3 sessions for full colour saturation, spaced at least 4 weeks apart. Many clients choose a maintenance “refresh” every 3–5 years.
-
Does it hurt?
Most describe mild discomfort. A topical anaesthetic can be used to keep you comfortable, especially on sensitive areas.
-
What is the downtime?
Expect temporary redness and mild swelling; if pigment is used it often looks darker for a week, then appears lighter during week two while healing. Most people resume normal routines the same or next day—follow the aftercare we provide.
-
Will the colour match my skin if I tan?
Pigment is matched to your current tone under clinic lighting. Natural skin can tan or fade seasonally; the tattooed area won’t tan the same way. Daily SPF on treated areas helps maintain a consistent blend.
-
Is it permanent?
It’s long-lasting but considered semi-permanent. Colour can soften over time due to skin turnover and UV exposure. Periodic refreshers help maintain results.
-
Are there risks?
Common: temporary redness, swelling, tenderness, and initial colour variance.
Possible: infection, colour mismatch or shift, hyper/hypopigmentation (more likely with sun), allergy (rare). We minimise risks with patch testing when appropriate, sterile technique, and clear aftercare.
-
Who should avoid this treatment?
Under 18, pregnancy or breastfeeding, active skin conditions/infection in the area, unstable or keloid-forming scars, recent strong sun exposure, and certain medical treatments. We’ll review your history during consultation.
-
How much does it cost?
Pricing depends on size, number of areas, and sessions required. Please see our pricing page or book a consultation for a quotation.
